It's Always Something, Part II

Can I get a do-over on the weekend? I was hoping it would be quiet and relaxing, but it seems like when I need that, I don't get it. I never heard back about whether Ruthie could attend puppy class, but it ended up being a moot point after I nearly fainted while walking her Saturday morning and then felt awful the rest of the day. I was exhausted (likely because Ruthie was up barking for several hours Friday night), my body hurt, I had chills, and I had a terrible sinus headache. I wasn't sure what was wrong with me. The Mister told me to go back to bed for a bit and sat with Ruthie, and in the afternoon all three of us girls snoozed. I slept well Saturday night and felt a little better when I got up on Sunday, but when I was looking in the mirror before stepping into the shower, I realized what the problem was. A visit to urgent care later in the day confirmed a case of mastitis (yes, even though I haven't nursed a baby in well more than a decade!). I'm now on antibiotics and hoping that they kick in soon, though Tylenol is helping with the aches and pains. On top of my list today is calling my OB/GYN to get in in a few days to get it checked out to be sure everything is as it should be.

If you want to know just how terrible I felt on Saturday, I will tell you that it was bad enough that I couldn't knit. It's been a long time since that happened. I think part of it was certainly the worry over not knowing what was wrong with me, so even though things weren't that much better on Sunday, I at least was pretty sure what the problem was and was just waiting for confirmation, so while Ruthie napped, I watched the U.S. Open and pulled out my Kouyou to figure out where I was going wrong.

It turns out that it was partly user error and partly bad charting. It seems that the four total border stitches (which are meant to be worked in garter stitch) are included in the chart, but I didn't realize that because they're charted as being in stockinette, so I was assuming what was on the chart was only the body stitches. Once I reread the instructions and realized the issue, everything worked out perfectly.

My Midsommarkrans top is making progress, too, though slowly. I've reached the point on the left and right front where the two pieces will be joined to complete the lace feature.

The good news is that it's a three-day week for me. The university is closed on Thursday for Juneteenth, and then I'm taking Friday off (using one of my two personal days that go poof at the end of the month if I don't use them). I don't expect my days off to be all that different, given that Ruthie doesn't understand that she can sleep in, but at least I won't be tied to a laptop all day. Here's hoping the next three days go quickly and easily! And just because, here's a photo of my girls. Clearly we're failing at keeping Ruthie off the couch!

  1. Oh Sarah! I am so so sorry... mastitis is the worst! I hope that you are feeling better each day, but rest is the key to success... so perhaps you and Ruthie can nap together!

  2. That sounds terrible, but I'm glad you got it figured out and have antibiotics. I had no idea that could happen if you weren't nursing, and I'm glad you got better advice than my dear MiL gave me when I had it decades ago. She told me to put a cabbage leaf in my nursing bra and that would draw out the infection; I'm betting antibiotics are working better. Your knitting looks good despite feeling terrible. Some things (like maybe dogs on the couch) just aren't worth the fight!

  3. Oh dear! Sarah I am so sorry. Ii sure hope you are feeling better today and getting back to normal. Thank goodness for a 3-day work week though. And, I just caught up on your Friday post and poor Ruthie! The two of you need to rest and take it easy!!

Your knitting does look so good Sarah (as always). Love the way your latest top is looking (well, it kind of looks like a bra in the picture). The lace is so pretty.

  4. Oh Sarah - so sorry and how crazy! Take it easy. We also failed at keeping our dog off the couch.

  5. I've never had mastitis, but it sounds terrible. Hope the meds do their job quickly. I'm glad to hear you at least could get back to knitting.

  6. I'm so sorry you are sick and I hope the meds will clear things up quickly. I had no idea you could get mastitis even when you aren't nursing! Here's to a short work week and a speedy recovery!

  7. It sounds like you could use another weekend. I'm so sorry. I hope the antibiotics work quickly. On the other hand, wow, you figured out a knitting problem while sick -- that's often when I create them.

  8. Sending quick-healing juju your way, Sarah. I hope the antibiotics have kicked in by now, and that you're on the way to feeling better. It's amazing how terrible any type of "-itis" can make you feel! I'm glad you were able to get some rest over the weekend. (And, yeah. We've never had much luck keeping our dogs off the couch either. Although we had a German Shepherd who didn't like getting his feet "off the ground." He was VERY well behaved and never got on a couch or a bed . . . but it was all him, not us. )

I had no idea you could get mastitis when you're not breast feeding! New terror unlocked! I'm so sorry you are dealing with that and will keep all fingers crossed that it's nothing to worry about in the end.

As for keeping Ruthie off the couch - I never could bring myself to bar my dogs. We just require them to be on a blanket. Duncan will literally sit there and stare us down (and sometimes even do a tiny squeak whine, which is huge for such a non-vocal dog) to let us know that he would like up and we need to spread out his blankie.

  10. It is always something. I hope everything checks out with the OB/GYN and the meds help you heal. After this last surgery, I had three or four of those days when I couldn't knit. It is an odd sinking kind of feeling. Your girls are darling. I look forward to seeing more of that top. The lace detail is so pretty.

  11. Oh my, Sarah, you have had ALL of it! I sure hope the meds have kicked in for you (what a scare, and I had NO idea that was even a thing if you weren't nursing - yikes!) - and that Ruthie can engage with the other pups this weekend. For sure a 3-day (now down to 2!) work week will help. and the promise of knitting time. That tank is looking fabulous and I'm sure you're looking forward to working more on it. For sure, I'm looking forward to more progress photos :-)
