Welcome Home, Ruthie!

She's here! And she's even more adorable in person!

When we picked her up at the transport van, she was clearly very nervous. She was wagging her tail when we approached her in the kennel, but she wouldn't come out on her own. I held her on my lap in the car and did finally calm her down. I won't lie: We had a rough night. She is comfortable in her crate, but she started barking when I went upstairs to get ready for bed, so I ended up staying with her in the family room overnight, sleeping on the floor so she could see me. And this morning she was a little more willing to explore the house (but also had a couple of accidents), but it's clear she's still very cautious. She does seem to trust me, though, because this is her preferred position:

We'll see how today goes! I'm sure I'll be dragging from lack of sleep, but she's sure worth it.

  1. I have some hopefully helpful tips... I have found that turning on a radio softly, so there is some talking/music, etc. helps quiet a pup, especially at night. Also... a hot water bottle helps tremendously at night. But what a great mom you are for sleeping on the floor for sweet Ruthie! I love that picture of her curled up on your lap... that is the best, Sarah!

  4. What a sweetie! It'll take some time for her to fully settle in, but it's great she already associates you with safety! Welcome home, little one!

  5. She's so cute. I'm sure sleeping next to you will help her bond with you more. What a good dog mom! Good luck with the accidents - I think you are ready with some enzyme cleaner already, right? I swear by Nature's Miracle.

  8. It makes sense that she was unsettled last night - she was away from her mother and siblings and in a whole new place! How kind of you to spend the night with her so that she wouldn't be so scared. So glad you were ready for those accidents but JRTs are SO smart - she will pick that up in no time. Especially since she's seems so keen to keep YOU happy given how much she loves being in your lap!

I hope the weather in PA is as beautiful as it is here and that you and Ruthie get some practice on the leash today!

(and I'm taking notes from Kat's comment for my own little guy who will be here in less than two weeks!!)
