First up, four skeins of Shadow, a basic 100% wool laceweight. This colorway is called Basalt. It's a dark gray with just a hint of reddish purple. I'm not sure what this will turn into just yet, but maybe Ene's Scarf or Matilda.
The majority of the contents of the box was colors of the same yarn -- Palette -- specifically for an Ivy League Vest. I ordererd eight different colorways because I wasn't sure of the combination based on the pictures online, so I need your help in deciding (I only need six for the vest). One color -- Wood -- got thrown out right away because it turned out to be a little too orange for my taste. Here are the two possible combinations. I'm definitely decided on the top three colors in each picture, but the others I just can't settle on.
Combination A: (top row, left to right) Mist, Twig, Bark; (bottom row, left to right) Calypso Heather, Tidepool Heather, Rainforest Heather
Combination B: (top row, left to right) Mist, Twig, Bark; (bottom row, left to right) Pool, Calypso Heather, Tidepool Heather
I think what's giving me such trouble in making up my mind is that Rainforest Heather actually has a fair amount of purple in it, which seems to clash a bit with the browns, but the Pool seems significantly brighter than the two heathers next to it. What do you think?
I'm hoping to have a new project to show you in the next couple of days, but as it is Sunday, here's today's Spinning Sundays content: I finished the third, and final, bobbin of my CMF superwash merino this morning.

I think I'm going to have to break out the jumbo plying head to ply this stuff up. I can't wait to see how this yarn turns out!
I would go with the second combo. Having that bit of pretty sky blue in the vest will really make it vibrant. The three greens might be too close to really do the pattern justice.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I thought Combo A, with the way those three greens flow together. But the more I look at Combo B, the more I like it! You've got two complementary shades of brown, ditto with green, then mist and pool for contrast. It'll make a very eye-catching vest!
ReplyDeleteI really combo B the best. I liked combo A at first, but I think the pool will be a nice pop of color. The other colors will tone it down a bit too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else - I love the second combo. The blue would look so bright and happy next to the browns and greens.
ReplyDeleteYou can always whip out your handy dandy value finder and take the color out and just look at the value of the yarn, and make a decision that way. :) Perhaps knit a smallish swatch with the different combos and see what works best.
ReplyDeletewow--i'm the only one who votes for the first one? i think that the bottom center green in the second combination clashes with the other two greens--not the right coolness. but the greens in the top combination are all the same... (gah--my color theory is escaping me--hue? they're all the same degree of yellowness).
ReplyDeleteI like combo A myself, the greens seem to slow into one another - but will that make the FI patterning recede?
ReplyDeleteI suppose swatching is the only real way to tell....
I prefer combo A. I like the dark of the Rainforest rather thatn the bright pool. It 'feels' more like the vest...
ReplyDeleteI'm leaning towards combo A myself (although I think I'm in the minority). The 'Pool' just seems like it stands out too much compared to the others (unless you're using it specifically for an accent color).
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what it becomes!
i think the colors in combo a will all blend together and the pattern will get lost. (although i like the colors.) i'd go with b.
ReplyDeleteI like the colors in combo A. The purple doesn't stick out to me. If anything it could add depth.
ReplyDeletePool just really sticks out to me in combo B. I don't know why.
Can't wait to see!
Based on the photo, I am partial to combination A, but then I've always thought that purple and brown look nice together. Looking forward to seeing your plied handspun!
ReplyDeleteI'm favoring combination A, but to be honest, I really don't think you could go wrong with either. I know, some help I am.
ReplyDeleteOh.... 3 ply. My favorite!
I'm a combination "B" guy! :)
